Portugal Masters - Victoria, 14 Oct to 17 Oct 2010

Filipe Lima - Portugal Masters on Victoria Golf CourseCelebrating its fourth season on The European Tour International Schedule, the Portugal Masters returns once again this year to the delightful Oceânico Victoria Golf Course in Vilamoura.

Last year’s champion was Lee Westwood who – after three play-off defeats, two near misses in Major Championships and an astonishing 26 top ten finishes since his last victory – eventually ended more than two years without a European Tour title. Successive weekend rounds of 66 helped the Englishman to a 23 under par total of 265 and a two shot victory over Italy’s Francesco Molinari.

Going into the final round three shots adrift of leader Retief Goosen, Westwood knew he had to make a quick impact and did just that with birdies at each of the first four holes. With the South African slipping back, Westwood pressed on until the crucial moment arrived at the par five 17th. His second shot finished long and left but, from 30 yards, he conjured up a magical escape through the trees, tapped in for a birdie four and parred the last for victory. Molinari, second going into the final round, maintained that position with a closing 70 while Padraig Harrington, carded a final round 67 to take third place.
