Pinheiros Altos

Pinheiros Altos Golf Course located within the well-known Quinta do Lago estate, within the golfing world it is known as providing a mental challenge due to well placed hazards. Bordering the 18,300 hectares of Natural Park of Ria Formosa which provides a habitat for many species of birds and has much interesting vegetation.|Pinheiros Altos is a combination of 27 holes composed by three groups of 9 holes named Oliveiras (Olives), Pinheiros (Pines) and Sobreiros (Corks), respectively. This highly original and distinctive course possesses completely opposing characteristics. The original 18-hole course of Pinheiros Altos was well-known for its contrasting nines. While the first 9-hole are over rolling sandy undergrowth with gentle pine trees, the shorter second 9-hole runs through hills dotted with lakes that present the main obstacle for the golfers on this course.

Pinheiros Altos - latest comments and reviews

Susan Irving 2021-11-28
We enjoyed our day at Pinheiros Altos. The greens were good. Due to long distances between some greens and the next tees, I think it’s worth taking a buggy.

Mottet 2021-11-27

Simon Walkley 2021-11-24
Really surprised no buggy round course for refreshments - water etc

Mark Schmitz 2021-11-12
really nice and friendly

Nick Fry 2021-11-05
The greens weren’t great but the fairways were ok. The reception lady was exceptional

Pedro Chaparreiro 2021-11-04

Marco van Zijverden 2021-10-28
Very nice scenery but very poor greens

Paul Eaten 2021-10-24
Very enjoyable course

Angela Pott 2021-10-20
We played P.A. six times this year and we definitely won't play there next year!!! The layout is nice, the scenery is beautiful but we are fed up with their electric trolleys and the paved paths on the course. None of the e-trolleys runs for 18 holes. The paths are poorly maintained and broken. It is not only uncomfortable but dangerous to walk or ride across the paths. We had dry conditions and wonder what happens when it is wet.

Liam O'tuama 2021-10-17
Course condition was extremely poor. Greens in particular were all badly damaged and the worst we have played in Portugal or Spain over 20 years.. Course bunkers and surroundings need a lot of attention. Buggies were not available when we started. No electric trolleys were available.

Terry Martin 2021-10-16
Lovely golf course but the buggy paths need fixing

Jo Dirkx 2021-10-15
Nice layout of the course. Only the greens were not so fast and some greens and fairways don’t look good.

Ian Dodds 2021-10-10
Pines good. Olives not so good

Pierre-Alain DEVAUD 2021-10-08
It's a nice course, interesting, challenging, but they should have a problem with their greens. They are very slow, bumpy and irregular.

Alan Pole 2021-10-05
Tee'd off at 9.06am. Greens hadn't been swished and there was quite a bit of dew present. Once they dried out, greens still not great. Lots of unrepaired pitch marks and pretty slow. Not great for high season. That being said, the 18 holes we played (Pines and Corks) is a good and very attractive layout. Excellent service back in the Clubhouse afterwards from Joshua, great Club Sandwich on their beautiful terrace which overlooks the course. Can however only mark it overall as 7 out of 10 due to the greens.

NICK BEATTIE 2021-10-04
Played olives then pines. Greens were terrible patches of no grass on most greens. Fairways good but bunkers full of stones ready to damage your clubs. Finished olives 9 holes in great time then went on to pines to find we were now sat behind 4 groups of slow 4 balls!!!

Angela Pott 2021-10-04
We had a nice morning on Pinheiros Olive & Pine: Nice golf course, friendly staff. We like the practice facilities. Rangeballs are included. A few greens on "Olive" were in bad shape, overall the greens were slow. We rented electric trolleys, they seem to be very old and scrapped. One of the two run out of power after 15 holes. We called the caddy master and he came within 5 minutes with a new battery. When we let a riding group through they told us that last time they had to push their electric trolleys for nine holes.

Philip Kucharski 2021-10-03
Rustic, charming course with easy access for all levels. Greens need a little work. Pleasant clubhouse and restaurant

Mark Hutch 2021-09-29
Better than the last time

Edward Sturges 2021-09-28

Mark Hughes 2021-09-17
Our first time playing Pinheiros. Nice course made up of 3 different 9 hole loops, however quite a few of the greens are in poor condition, quite large areas of them are dead. Interestingly they have preferred lies on the fairways, which tells you all you need to know! Would I play here again, yes, however, be prepared buggies are €50!

Philippe Pineau 2021-09-17
Olives and Pines are nice courses, a bit tough for high handicappers, because of trees narrowing fairways and water on some holes. Greens rather slow (grainy), fairways ok, bunkers need clean sand. Good chipping green with bunkers, too few holes on putting green, driving range width divided in half: Member’s half empty, while visitor’s half full (= can’t practice), good range balls. Buggies, club house, etc… ok

Glenn Byles 2021-09-14
I love Pinheiros Altos. The staff are very helpful and pleasant. The three courses are all magnificent and the clubhouse is very friendly. Overall a lovely experience.

Nigel Wood 2021-09-06
A tight golf course requiring real accuracy.Very good clubhouse service. One annoyance was the behaviour of greenstaff who raced ahead of us to cut greens while we waited. This happened 3 times on the front 9.Surely by now they should know to cut greens in reverse order so that golfers are only held up once?!

Simon hughes 2021-09-02
The first 9 holes we played , Olives I think , were a little neglected , the pines was in decent shape and we had a good time

Rebecca Draper 2021-09-01
The course is very attractive and quite challenging in that you need to plot your way round some holes, rather than just hit and hope! However, the greens were awful ..some had been hollow tined, others were quite slow and most had several dry, bare patches on them. A shame as it would otherwise be a lovely course (we played yellow and blue courses)

Peter Dawson 2021-09-01
I've this course every year for the past 6, often 4 or 5 times during my holiday. This was the poorest condition I've seen it in, especially the greens. I think the course has been closed and it looks as if they haven't maintained it during this time. However, the cost of the round reflected this so we can't have it both ways. Also, 40euros for a single occupant buggy is excessive, but I guess it is the going rate.

Lisa Cullen 2021-08-27
Enjoyed this course

Carine Trierweiler 2021-08-23
Pinheiros olivos is not in a nice shape, Greens are horrible, that why we were a bit disapointed. Pinheiros pines is in a better condition somehow all the course needs maintance

Kreyenhop 2021-08-19
Very nice service

C Gartside 2021-08-12

Simon Brice 2021-08-10

Geoff Bruce 2021-06-17
Great as very empty but would be good if some on course toilets were open
Tee Times reply: Not allowed at the moment because of convid measures

Carl Bak 2021-06-13
Always good on coming back in a timely and accommodating our requests

M. Van eck 2021-05-29
We like to play on pinheiros altos.

Chris Dennison 2021-05-26
We plays Pines and Corks, neither was in prime condition, fairways a bit ragged in places and the cart paths in need of considerable overhaul. That said, the greens were good, the staff very helpful and the courses quite and hence the round was quick. This resort does not compare with its more illustrious neighbours but then neither does the price!

M. Van eck 2021-05-25
The course needs maintenance, it’s a pity to see that pinheiros altos isn’t anymore what it was

Robert Moore 2019-10-08
Most enjoyable round of golf I have played at Pinheiros to date. Greens in decent shape although the state of some tee boxes could be improved. Always a pleasure to play Olives then the Pines and miss out on the Corks. Great that you can hit the (grass) range beforehand free of charge. Excellent value for money breakfast (12 EUR for full english, coffee and OJ) and a beautiful terrace to soak up the afternoon sun. Pinheiros might just have made it back onto the rota for the 2020 Algarve tour.

michael charlton 2019-06-28
very smooth booking transaction. course staff very helpful and most of all great value for money. golf fee buggy included and free range balls

jonathan thomson 2019-06-15
Played olives and corks greens were excellent. Fairways not as good. Course was great fun and good challenge. Buggies no GPS or water provided. Driving range is best in area hitting off grass

Stuart 2019-06-13
Excellent, replay helpful and very patient. Transfers were spot on as well.

Gina Leong 2019-04-09
Challenging course. Nice and quiet. Lots of mosquitos and bugs, so recommend you take mosquito repellent. Pines course at Altos is quite hilly, so if you don’t like walking up hills, you could consider getting a buggy.

Michael Smythe 2019-04-06
Golf would have been better if I avoided more trees got to keep straight . A good test of golf

Phil Sharpe 2018-05-30
Played the Olives & Pines courses, loved them. First time we’ve played Pinheiros Altos and we will return. Course and greens in great nick, staff very friendly and lunch menu varied and good quality

Burns 2018-05-20
Excellent, the golf course was amazingly quiet so had a most enjoyable round

Daniel Mardell 2018-05-10
Great course and really friendly staff - highly recomended

Mr Tom Woodhouse 2018-03-10
Olives closed due to wet weather so moved to pines and corks, which are actually my preferred combination. Great conditioning. PA has always been consistently good and the range nearby makes it easy to prepare pre round. Nice lunch too, and very reasonably priced.

Doug Smith 2017-07-22
A hot day with a stiff breeze. We played the 2 best 9's, Olives and Pines. The course was in fine condition with fast fairways and moderate greens. The bunkers were a bit crusty on top due to the hot weather, but in the main played well. A nice course in a great setting.

John Gilchrist 2020-11-18
Very enjoyable

Jim Gillis 2020-10-22
Played the Cork and Pinheiros 9s after heavy rains the previous day and the fairways were in surprisingly good condition. The greens were a little fuzzy and slow and I assume that would be because of the weather the previous day and not being manicured as normal and a couple had some disease which took away a bit from the overall good condition of the course. Both 9s are a fair test of golf with some accessible holes for scoring and some that will test even the better lower handicaps. The course and restaurant staff were both very professional, courteous and quick to serve the customers which was appreciated. Definitely will look forward to playing here again.

Simon D Turner 2020-09-14
Once a top flight course but no longer as let down by its poor state of the greens (Corks & Pines). However, since I last played here it has matured on the new configured nine holes.

Tony Burgess 2020-03-05
Very good tee time booking website. Course was excellent.

Tony Burgess 2020-02-16
Good website and an efficient process.

Stephen Norris 2020-02-07
Practice fertility’s first class golf course is in good condition Green’s exceptional all staff make you feel welcome al in all a great day

John Gilchrist 2020-01-25
Enjoyed the course and the company.

Nick Fry 2020-01-20
Very good condition

Boitard Jean-Paul 2019-12-12
Beau golf , très varié.

Simon Richardson 2019-12-03
Played Olives and Pines. Olives course could have been in better condition: 1 green was diseased, 2 greens had extensive amount of Goose droppings that could have been cleared, long par 5 fairway had some standing water. Pines was a lovely 9 holes, 1 tee being upgraded but rest of course a real pleasure to play. Clubhouse was magnificent with very friendly and helpful staff.

David Bowles 2019-11-27
Great challenges for all golfers whatever ability they possess. Greens accessible and today a test of Patience and self control was required due to weather conditions. However scoring conditions were fair. A very. Enjoyable. Experience.

Ewa Helldin 2019-11-27
Course: Nice lay-out but placement on the fairway was needed. Greens were good even if they had been recently dressed with sand. Company: As always, Chez Carlos Golf Society brings nice people together!

Henry Nash 2019-11-11
good all round experience. course in good condition

Chris Lennox 2019-11-09
Well organised tournament as usual. Course in very good condition.

Angelo Zanchi 2019-11-09
Good course good maintenance efficient staff

Robert Pettit 2019-11-02
Lovely course. Redicously busy. We had to change the 9 holes we played. So SLOW. Not the best experience.

Joe Annett 2019-10-31
Staff at golf reception were very helpful

Joe Annett 2019-10-31
Staff at golf reception were very helpful

Joe Annett 2019-10-30
Staff at golf reception were very helpful

Andy Robinson 2019-10-30
Well organised event. Course was in very good condition and the pace of play excellent

Neil Wendel-Jones 2019-10-13
Excellent friendly service, course in great condition, just one negative which is not restricted to Pinheiros Altos, not being allowed to take buggies on to par 3 holes is very unfair on disabled golfers who physically can’t walk more than a few yards!

Olie 2019-10-11
Good course layout but could be in better condition

David Bowles 2019-10-10
Such an enjoyable event. Yes the course can be a little tricky but fair.

Paul Dawson 2019-09-27
Friendly helpful staff who made the experience that much better . The Pines and the Cork , in my opinion were the better two nines , but the Olives was not far behind .

Robert Webb 2019-09-15
good course.good condition. some greens were poor. Some tees long way from previous green. Good company-I was rubbish but overall a course I would play again. Driving range excellent

Nigel Lander 2019-09-14
Alway fun playing PA, it’s a fair test with some great long par 4 and a couple of impossible par 5 ‘S . But if you are hitting the ball well there are plenty of places to attack. And the greens are true and quick. It never disappoints.

Carol Lane 2019-09-13
Club house and facilities superb - great free use of driving range. Frustrating not to know in advance which course (2 nine combination) you’re playing. Buggies at 50 Euros a rip off with no waters or ice included. Staff quite stand offish

Graham Wilkinson 2019-09-01
Super venue with great facilities Staff were very friendly and helpful Coarse was in great order Can’t wait to go back again

Ian Hartis 2019-07-28
Excellent course

Ingrid van Loenhout 2019-07-07
First a warm welcome. Then what a stunning course. Overwhelming views and challenging greens. The fairways beautifully kept. We played “Corks” first. Then “Olives”. We defenitely prefered “Corks”

Duncan Stark 2019-07-05
Some fairways and tees where rough in spots greens excellent. If the green fees where less then more rounds would be played.

Susan Morris 2019-06-21
We had a very enjoyable game. Some of the fairways were a little bare but we played preferred lies so this didn't affect play.

Carole Drury 2019-06-20
Good courses and not too busy - easily on a par with the more expensive Quinta courses

Carlos Cardoso 2019-06-17
All went as plan.

John Cofield 2019-06-12
Another course in great condition especially the greens and a good mix of holes, tree lined and water holes. Great value for money. Just spoilt a little by an over zealous marshall on the 2nd hole who could be perceived as rude.

Peter Tholen 2019-06-02
Good course, poorly signed on course

Nigel Gell 2019-05-28
Good game, course not in good condition.

Stewart Officer 2019-05-26
A good experience with a welcome introduction by Ron, which was much appreciated and a social meeting with other players afterwards.

Dean goodchild 2019-05-21
Fantastic very easy booking and what a beautiful good coarse all went very well thanks v much I’ll be looking at playing Thursday so will be in touch . Dean

Cummins Martina 2019-05-21
Very enjoyable. Good course

Darren Clarke 2019-04-29
Superb course

Steven Burton 2019-04-26
We played the Corks course as our front 9 and were very disappointed with the number of unrepaired pitch marks. Probably the worst I've ever seen on any course. However it did not detract from a good course overall.

Robin Seabrook 2019-04-06
Course in good condition, greens very good and quite quick. Day was made very difficult due to strong wind and occaisional showers.

Heather Ward 2019-03-23
Anothe fun day with great company, thank you so much ????????

Philip Freshwater 2019-02-27
Very friendly staff and good quality golf course

David Askew 2019-02-17
Had not played there for about 15 years ... liked the course . Condition a bit mixed some the fairways were very poor but the greens were superb better than most of the others we have played between November and now ... penina and Vila sol only ones better ...

Tony Williams 2019-02-12
We enjoyed Pineros Altus. Would rate it same as Vilamoura Laguna and slightly better than Pinhal and Millenium

Gillian Travis 2018-11-22
Played Olives & Pines, 2 very contrasting 9s. Unfortunately Olives was very wet, in addition to the water hazards & the greens had been top-dressed & were very slow. Pines was much drier & greens lovely. Buggy was limited to the paths (not even a 90 degree rule. This is not good for players with medical problems who cannot walk 18 holes......…! We understand that wet conditions can prevail & they have to look after the course but they really should reduce the price of the buggy &/or the course fee to help compensate for poor course quality.

Jim Houlihan 2018-10-23
This course is a 27 hole complex but realistically there is only enough room for 18 holes. Therefore itis tricked up,with out of bounds on most holes and trees blocking the entrance to the middle of greens. The greens were'nt in great condition the day we played as they were sandy and slow. Overall I would not recommend this course. €102 green and €50 for a buggy I have played better municipal golf courses for a fraction of the price.

Paul Hassall 2018-09-19
Excellent course , great value for money and very well organised

Michael Walsh 2018-09-15
Good course well maintained.

Gavin 2018-09-03
1st class service Buggy was delivered to car really attentive and course played lovely

Mr IAN Hartis 2018-07-26
Excellent course challenging in parts

mark wakefield 2018-06-19
Great course & facility

Bob Brown 2018-06-01
1st nine on Corks was good condition but not the most interesting of the 3 9s - 2nd 9 on Olives was excellent - always love playing it

Fearghal McEvatt 2018-05-31
Olives are only ok , Pines are lovely and also Soleiros . Greens are fair and fairways are fine.

Mike Ford 2018-05-14
very good

David Bowles 2018-05-13
A solid test for all levels of ability with some interesting choices off the Tee and to the green. Course Tee’s and greens in good testing condition, however fairways need some attention. Overall a very enjoyable experience. Well worth a visit.

Mike Lee 2018-05-08
Beautiful location. Course in good condition, all the players liked it. 50 Euros for a buggy is expensive compared to the Vale Do Lobo resort which is only 30 Euros.

Robillard 2018-05-04
Amazing course. We love it.

Juergen Juchtmann 2018-04-30
Beautiful course, but fairways go from bad to worse during play. Not very well cared for! Over all too expensive for the experience. Greens are mostly okay, tees bad

Peter Watson 2018-04-17
Very good course but the fairways need some attention in places. We as a group would return to play the course again.

John Powell 2018-04-12
Course was in good condition - good experience

SASSARD - MARIE 2018-04-11
Very well

Robert Watt 2018-03-30
Nice course and I enjoyed playing it. Some fairways are needing time to repair. For the good of the course I think it would be good to mark the bare areas as GUR and ask golfers to play their shot from adjacent grassy areas.

Doug Smith 2018-03-10
Considering the inclement weather recently including storm Emma and then Felix, the course was in excellent shape. Some wet patches in the fairways but new grass showing through every where after the recent heavy rain. The bunkers were in excellent condition and showed no sign of the recent storms. Excellent greens, a little slow perhaps. Good course.

Gordon McCrae 2018-02-12
Pinheiros Altos is a great course to play, three different nine hole loops that are challenging but shouldn't spoil your fun. Great service from Teetimes, as always. I use them every year and the service has always been brilliant

Doug Smith 2018-02-11
3 challenging sets of 9. Playing quick in the dry conditions. Greens quite quick so try and stay below the hole.. easier said than done.

Bill Williams 2018-02-01
Course was very good, staff friendly. Free range balls - great idea! BUT - 50 Euros for a buggy !!!!!!!

Hirt 2017-12-30

Bep Van Der Pas 2017-12-01
Not an easy nut fair C ourse. A pleasure to play.

Adam marlow 2017-11-11
Nice little course but the Bermuda grass on the tee boxes was tricky! Buggy handler also very impolite but overall a good day.

Doug Smith 2017-10-25
A good challenging course. The teeing grounds are undergoing some renovation but otherwise the course is in good condition despite the long hot dry summer.

Westley Macey 2017-10-19
Played pines and corks the course was in fabulous condition and deserves credit and a higher rating in the course guides for me some cracking holes incorporating multiple water hazards

John Beckett 2017-10-18
Preferred lies and the course was heavily watered making some areas very boggy. The buggy was quite expensive for the basic variety

Noel Moroney 2017-10-17
Is it possible to choose which nines you play ie We played Pines and olives this year and next year would like Pines and Corks
Tee Times reply: Dear Noel, unfortunately it isnt possible to choose. The course have a schedule to rotate them and sometimes can change depending on the conditions of each 9. Regards

Neil williamson 2017-10-14
Really liked Pinheiros altos, course was in good condition & staff in the pro shop were very friendly & helpful.

Derek 2017-10-13
Overall a good experience. Course good, would have liked a choice on which course we played but it is the busy season. Was the most expensive buggy hire that we paid over 5 previous rounds and there was no ice in the cooler box!. Planned to have a meal following our game but they had stopped serving when we got back, Teed off at 13.30

Bob Guard 2017-10-12
Excellent course and in good condition. Soft in places due to amount of water that had been used but did not detract from the experience. As always - enjoyed playing this course.

Craig Burgoyne 2017-09-22
Good course, staff were helpful and there are fabulous facility's, driving range practice putting green and a good 19th hole

Colin McGhie 2017-09-20
nice course - quite tight. Didn't appreciate to being told to speed-up our play when there was no one behind us, spoilt our round.

Doug Smith 2017-09-09
A really nice course, three nines so depends which 2 nines you play. Olives and Pines consist in the main of the original 18. Olives has the par 3 island green. Great fun. The greens were medium speed but played well. Great practice facilities to start with.

David sattin 2017-06-13
Good, very busy

Doug Smith 2017-05-31
A good challenge. Never easy but interesting. Some holes are just difficult. But good fun with 3 different 9s to choose from. Give it a go. Great location.

Maurice Rogers 2017-05-30

Alan Hennessy 2017-05-26
Good golf course, overall golf course is in good condition with the only area needing some work being the fairways which can be quite patchy and bare in places

Andy Robinson 2017-05-17
Really challenging course in very good condition. The breeze made it a challenging day, particularly the 8th hole on the ''olives'' course. A par 3 that has a totally island green. Play this and you will experience something like the 17th at Sawgrass! Really well organised day -- as always -- by Doug.

Per Lokken 2017-05-09

Per Lokken 2017-05-09

Peter Sandtorv 2017-05-09
Nice course but fairways was in relativly poor conditions compared to the other golfcourses in the area

Mark Punter 2017-05-03
A relaxing round with not too many crowds, the condition of the course was good and the clubhouse and facilities are of a high standard.

Robin Seabrook 2017-04-09
Played on Sat 8 April with Chez Carlos Society, very friendly group as always, course in very good condition, greens putted well, 9's played Olives and Oaks. Water on Olives claimed a couple of balls, will be back to try and make amends.

Ronald Pharoah 2017-04-02
Many thanks for arranging an alternative to Vila Sol, to give more of us a chance to play. Pineheiros Altos is one of the best courses on the Algarve. Very challenging, extremely well maintained and component, friendly staff. More of the same please!

David Stubbings 2017-03-24
Some fairways on the corks were in very poor condition

M. Douglas Faminow 2017-02-28
The course has a nice design. Mid-handicap players that are long, but less than straight, will find it difficult to score well because of the OB that lurks on many holes. Shorter/straight hitters will not be troubled. The fairways seemed to have scant grass, with little cushion, but I suppose that we can chalk that up to the cold winter and poor grass growth. Greens very large and tricky (lots of false slopes)--difficult to read. They were fast and of consistent pace, so quite fair. I would say that the greens were probably the best feature of this course. Roadways for the golf carts were not always good, with some significant unevenness in places. Hopefully these will soon be repaired. Bunkers were fair and good quality, with sufficient sand, well-raked, etc. This is not a good course for walking (for seniors, anyway), so cart rental should be recommended for the over 50 crowd.. In short, I would play the course again but would not consider this a course that I would want to frequently play. Perhaps 2-3 times per year at most.

Hugh Logue 2016-12-26
Great day, good company and a fine course.

Howard Lockhart 2016-12-01
Welcoming club and in good condition especially after the rain. Played here before and it has improved.

Christine O'Neill 2016-11-16
I thought the tee boxes were not up to standard.

Graca Carter 2016-10-26
Great course in great conditions.

Derek Thomas 2016-10-14
Great, helpful and a good course set up whichever 9holes you play

Richard Hannam 2016-10-03
Greens a bit on the soft side resulting in footprint indents and bobbly surface etc

Trevor Hatton 2016-09-27
Reasonable venue and close to the hotel but the course seemed in poor condition overall. It was clearly the ''filler'' course on the tour. Probably wouldn't play it again.

Carlos Ferreira 2016-09-25
We play the two nines Olives and Pines, each presenting different characteristics. The Olives , are the old back nine and are more flat, the wind has greater influence and have some holes where the water element come in to play . The eight hole, island par 3, that is between 100mt and 120mt depending on the position of the tee is a good choice for nearest the pin at any competion, and is also the golf course signature hole . Pines the original front nine where 4 new holes have been integrated and as its name indicates presents a more parkland course, plenty of pine trees , elevations , dog legs and also 3 lakes that protect 3 very tempting greens . the 4th a short par 5 , the 5th a long par 4 , stroke 1 and the 6th a par 5 reachable in 2 if you had a good tee shot . Signature hole , again a beautiful Par 3 over a valley to a McKenzie green . A great golf course very demanding and if you suceed to finish with 36 points on stabelford you pobrably have played your best golf .

Located within the Quinta Do Lago estate Pinheiros Altos is one of the finest golf courses in the Algarve and soon to celebrate its twentieth birthday. It was a team competition this week with two scores to count in teams of 3 over the Olives and Pines layout. The course was in great condition with lush green fairways and trademark fast greens. Commenting Dave Reaney (h/cap 13) ‘I’ve never played this course till today and really enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to returning and playing the Corks next time’. The Nearest the Pin was as usual the island green hole 8th (Olives) with many balls taking a plunge into the surrounding waters. It’s an entertaining hole to play at any time. Our Society golf competitions in the Algarve are good fun and a great opportunity to meet old and new friends whilst sampling some of the best golf courses in Portugal. Afterwards we returned back to the Chez Carlos Bar & Restaurant and enjoyed impromptu fresh clams which were just purchased from a visiting local fisherman. Cooked in lemon butter accompanied by fresh bread they were delicious.

It was the turn to play the format of Pinheiros (Pines) and Sobreiros (Corks) with 24 players gathering midday beneath cloudy blue skies on the first tee. There was an ensemble of old and new members and guests playing today many of whose handicaps were mid-teens. The course was in good condition and the trademark fast greens in play even though they had been sanded. It was a calm three holes before the wind made itself felt as we moved into the more exposed part of the course at hole 4. Special mention must go to two members; one making an impressive eagle at the 435mts Par 5 6th hole (Pinheiros) and another a birdie at the 497mts Par 5 8th hole (Sobreiros).

Located between Quinta Do Lago and San Lorenzo the 27 holes at Pinheiros Altos (High Pines) is a firm favourite with many a golfer in the Algarve and home for many a celebrity and footballer. Today the Society took on the Sobreiros and Oliveiras loops. The fairways were brown but this was only the bermuda grass in its dormant stage in winter. Come the warmth of springtime it will be its usual blaze of green. If there was stimpmeter reading taken on the greens it would have surely read 12 – similar to Troia the other week. Anything topside and you had problems.
