Espiche is South African architect Peter Sauerman's design, opened in 2012 in a protected nature reserve five minutes from Lagos, in the western Algarve. The front nine runs out past the village of Espiche; the back nine climbs into the hills behind it, through olive, fig and almond trees, with the Serra de Monchique on the horizon.
It's a par-72 of just under 5,900 metres, built to follow the land's natural contours rather than reshape them. Expect rolling, undulating ground, a few blind tee shots, tight landing areas and large, undulating greens that reward touch over power. Water shows up on two or three holes, and dense native scrub lines the fairways throughout, so accuracy off the tee matters more than distance.
The clubhouse, designed separately by architect Nadine Berger and built on the ruins of an old farmhouse, with the original stone worked into its lower walls, opened in 2014 and took third place in Golf Inc. Magazine's Worldwide Clubhouse of the Year the following year, the first club outside the United States to be recognised in the category. It's home to the Gecko restaurant, alongside a driving range, academy, locker room and pro shop. Book a round at the course that put sustainable Algarve golf on the map.

Such a great golf course, I'm sure if this was in a better location it would be in the top 5 Algarve courses. A proper test of accuracy off the tee, anything semi wayward is a reload! The greens were understandable left a little long for the July heat. Third time I've played here and won't be the last.

Very nice course. Fairways are tight. Greens are a little slow but we really enjoyed the the day.

In great condition but as always a tricky and unfair golf course. It was windy which made it very difficult and not as enjoyable as the other courses.

Course OK in general, greens fairly slow and many rough patches on the fairways… too hard surfaces which make the ball jump anywhere even on good shots.

Campo bonito e club house bem conseguido, os greens precisam de ser trabalhados, julgo que não devem ser furados há muito tempo.

Great course. Friendly people.
I booked twilight tee-time, normally you can play until sunset / when it is getting dark. This was around 20:20 hrs. However, they closed the course at 19:00 hrs, so we were in a hurry to be back in time.

I would recommend you to everyone planning a golf trip to mail tee times to organise the perfect golf getaway.

Seamless check in, lovely quirky course although unforgiving; take plenty golf balls if your not accurate off the tee
