Vale da Pinta Golf Course Lagoa, Algarve
Vale da Pinta is home to one of the most remarkable living things on any golf course in the Algarve: a single olive tree, still standing among the fairways, believed to be more than 1,200 years old. Ronald Fream built the course around it in 1992, and the layout has since hosted the European Seniors Tour Qualifying final for the best part of a decade running.
This is a course that rewards local knowledge more than most. The par-5 4th sets an early test, a long, uphill tee shot toward a marker post with out-of-bounds down the left and rough closing in from the right, before the hole opens out downhill through ancient olive and carob trees. The par-3 5th follows immediately, played from an elevated tee to a shallow green ringed by water and bunkers, often into the wind. The long, exposed par-5 13th is the hole most golfers remember, especially on a breezy day. First-timers should expect a few blind shots and hidden turns; regulars know exactly where to aim, and that's part of the appeal, this is a course you get better at every time you play it.
Facilities include a full driving range, a resident academy, and a clubhouse restaurant. Vale da Pinta pairs naturally with its sister course, Gramacho, nearby, for golfers spending a few days around Carvoeiro. Gramacho Golf Course Lagoa, Algarve
Gramacho Golf Course has a trick up its sleeve that no other course in the Algarve can quite match: eighteen fairways, but twenty-seven greens. Play it once and you've seen one version of the course. Play it again and the whole character can shift, hole by hole. Designed in 1991 by Ronald Fream working alongside former World No. 1 Nick Price, it has gone on to host European Seniors Tour qualifying and the Ladies Portuguese Open more than once, proper championship pedigree hiding inside a course that's genuinely playable across a wide range of handicaps.
Boulder outcrops, dry-stone walls, and centuries-old carob trees give the round a rooted, unhurried feel, while lakes and bunkers are placed to reward good decisions rather than punish for the sake of it. The greens are the course's calling card: fast, well-contoured, and consistently the part guests remember most. The round builds to a genuinely memorable finish, a par-5 18th played back toward the clubhouse terrace, water guarding the approach, with the whole gallery of the terrace watching your last swing of the day.

Silves Golf Course Silves, Algarve
Silves doesn't try to dazzle you with scale, it wins you over hole by hole. Opened in 2006 at the foot of the Monchique mountains, the course winds through orange and olive groves and working cork and citrus farms, with palm trees framing views that feel more like the working Algarve than the resort version.
The layout rewards attacking, well-placed golf over raw power. Recent changes have reshuffled the round, and what was once the opening hole now closes it: a genuine test where the tee shot has to thread between water on both sides, played out in full view of the new clubhouse terrace. In between, doglegs on the front nine ask for precise placement, while the back nine tightens up with more elevation change. It's a course low handicappers will find a real challenge to break par on, and one higher handicappers can enjoy without ever feeling overwhelmed, a rare balance, and probably why so many golfers here describe it as a course they keep coming back to.
The clubhouse restaurant, newly renovated, makes for a natural place to watch the last groups finish on the 18th. One honest note: there's no driving range on site, just a small practice green, so anyone wanting a proper warm-up should plan ahead. Salgados Golf Course Albufeira, Algarve
Salgados is Pedro Vasconcelos's design, laid out with American architect Robert Muir Graves and opened in September 1994 within the wetlands of the Salgados Lagoon Nature Reserve, near Albufeira. A substantial renovation followed in 2012 under landscape architect Álvaro Mano, and the course has been freshened again more recently, including a new island green at the 12th.
It's a flat, links-style par 72 of around 6,100 metres, where water does most of the defending, in play on the majority of holes rather than literally every one. The signature pairing is the 6th, a par-5, and the reworked 12th, a par-3 played to that new island green. Palm trees line the fairways in place of the pines found elsewhere in the Algarve, and the wind off the coast is a constant factor on this exposed, open site. The flat ground means the buggy is optional rather than essential.
The clubhouse has a restaurant and bar, and the resort adds a driving range, resident professionals, locker room and pro shop. Book a round at the course built into a wetland reserve, and one regularly singled out as some of the best value golf in the Algarve.
